One Billion Rising
Description
The One Billion Rising campaign is a worldwide danced protest for an end to violence against women, girls, female-read and female-socialized people. Everyone who wants to set an example is invited to dance along on February 14, 2025 at 2 p.m. on Museumsplatz in Krems. We will be dancing to the song “Break the Chain”.
Whether you dance to choreography or improvise is up to you. One Billion Rising is not about dance perfection, it is about the why and the wherefore. Dance by women in public spaces is a political issue in itself; dance is liberating and can help traumatised people find their way back to their bodies. Clothing in red and pink (hoods, scarves...) serves as a sign of recognition for the event.
One Billion Rising Krems is part of One Billion Rising Austria and is initiated by Kunsthalle Krems in cooperation with Lilith Frauenberatung Krems.

The One Billion Rising campaign is a global dance protest to end violence against women and girls. The billion comes from the UN statistic that one third of all women and girls worldwide are victims of violence in their lifetime. One Billion Rising takes place as a danced rally because dance gives power, because dance in public space is a statement - and because women traumatized by violence can find their way back to their bodies through dance. Since 2013, thousands of activists around the world have sung and danced against violence against women and girls on February 14.
"1 in 3 women in the world will be beaten or raped in her lifetime. That's ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. Every February, in countries around the world, we rise up to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like, and to shine a light on the pervasive impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. We rise through dance to express joy and community and to celebrate the fact that we are not defeated by this violence. We rise to show that we are determined to create a new kind of consciousness - one in which violence is resisted until it is unthinkable."
