IRONIMUS 90
No politics for a change! Cartoons from 1948 to 2018
04.03.2018-27.05.2018
The exhibition to mark the legendary cartoonist's 90th birthday presents new, previously unpublished cartoons from his "retirement".
For more than 60 years, the cartoonist IRONIMUS took aim at current political events with a sharp pen before retiring at the end of 2014. To mark his 90th birthday, the Karikaturmuseum Krems is now presenting an exhibition of his best non-political drawings for the first time: subtle cartoons and enigmatic observations that play with the ambiguity of life and art - and show us the absurdity of small, everyday moments.
IRONIMUS, whose real name is Gustav Peichl, was born in Vienna in 1928. He published his first drawings at the age of 18 and worked for over 60 years as a cartoonist for Die Presse, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Stern, Die Weltwoche and Vorarlberger Nachrichten. With more than 12,000 caricatures, over 30 books and around 100 exhibitions, he can look back on an unparalleled career, and his ORF programs Die Karikatur der Woche and Der Jahresrückblick in der Karikatur reached an audience of millions. Under his civil name he became known as an architect, for example through the construction of the ORF regional studios in Graz, Innsbruck, St. Pölten etc., the extension of the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn and the Karikaturmuseum Krems.
The exhibition is curated by Gottfried Gusenbauer, artistic director of the Karikaturmuseum Krems, and Markus Peichl, gallery owner and IRONIMUS' son. It shows over 50 drawings from the years 1948 to 2018, including new, previously unpublished sheets that have only recently been created.
