Tex Rubinowitz
Caricature brute. The opposite of beautifully drawn. Excursus #2
18.05.2019-29.09.2019
With the anniversary exhibition A real Deix - Unforgotten! on the occasion of Manfred Deix's 70th birthday, the Karikaturmuseum Krems launched a new series of subject-related additions, independent presentations of artists as well as cartoon and drawing styles. These excursions are intended to sharpen the understanding of individual terms such as caricature, cartoon and many more, but also to highlight and work out differences in the understanding of humor and different cultural positions.
After an excursus on colleagues who have dealt directly with Manfred Deix's work and/or his death, the second excursus now follows on the cartoons and drawings of Tex Rubinowitz. Caricature brut - The opposite of beautifully drawn. Excursus #2 (18.05.2019 to 29.09.2019).
In Excursus #2, the Caricature Museum Krems presents six political commentaries drawn for the Falter, twelve cartoons that never cease to surprise with their peculiar protagonists and particularly absurd humor, as well as 20 "Wilbur" comic strips.
With his direct and absurd drawings, Tex Rubinowitz is one of the most important representatives of the so-called "caricature brute" - a stark contrast to the virtuoso and carefully crafted works of Manfred Deix. The epithet brute comes from the French and means something like raw, dry, unprocessed or unpolished. This describes Tex Rubinowitz's work quite precisely. His drawings are quick and sketchy. They depict bizarre, absurd scenes, snapshots of a strange world. His visual language is sometimes unexpected, often incomprehensible, but also literary, and he works with wordplay and word invention.
