About the Museum

Architecture

© Andreas Hofer

The Kunsthalle Krems unites industrial heritage with modern architecture. Formerly a tobacco factory in the nineteenth century, the building was repurposed by Adolf Krischanitz as a contemporary exhibition hall. Permanent works of art by Eva Schlegel and Peter Kogler grace the interior, giving the Kunsthalle Krems a distinctive atmosphere.

Program

"My program brings international art to life at the Kunsthalle Krems. Working directly with artists, exhibitions are realized that reflect socially relevant issues from a progressive standpoint. Through collaborations with important partner organizations, critical positions in contemporary art are often presented for the first time in German-speaking countries, thereby shedding light on new developments."

- Florian Steininger, artistic director of the Kunsthalle Krems

History

The Kunsthalle Krems arose from a visionary idea: an old tobacco factory outside the metropolis of Vienna was to be transformed into a modern Kunsthalle. As the first exhibition venue on what is known today as the Kunstmeile Krems, the focus eventually shifted to international contemporary art. Important artists have been featured here including Arnulf Rainer, Yoko Ono, Pipilotti Rist, Hans Ob de Beeck, and Helen Frankenthaler.
